Mermaids and mermen, who live deep in the ocean, stay far, far away from the greedy and exploitative humans. Instead, they live a life full of fun and play — feasting all day and drinking all night. Fuchsia, the pink-haired mermaid, is an actress who performs shows. However, upon entering adulthood, sick of swimming in circles day after day, Fuchsia is searching for more. One day, she swims to the surface of the sea, where she meets the Captain. What was intended to be a playful encounter turns into a haunting memory, as the Captain sails away and Fuchsia can’t seem to get him off her mind.

After praying to Mother Mermaid, goddess of the sea, Fuchsia begins to learn about her magnificent, spiritual destiny. For her first mission, Fuchsia is sent to live as a human in a nearby beachtown called “Oceana Paradise.” Here, she meets a kind boy named “Zale,” a majestic girl named “Rainbow,” and a wise and elderly psychic named “Madame,” who will serve to be a mentor.

Through many trials and tribulations, it becomes prevalent that the Captain and the Mermaid have an undeniable connection. On this journey full of unexpected twists and turns, Fuchsia finds radical self-acceptance, confronts her inner demons, ponders the meaning of fate, and discovers bravery.

Back story

I began the first draft for this story on this blog, it was back in early 2019. It was supposed to be a short story, just that one post, and then it was many months later when I decided to add another part. And then overtime, I kept adding more to the story, until I decided to go for a full ten parts. I’ve written so many stories in my life, and some have been shared with family or close friends, but this is the first piece of fiction that I shared with the world. This is also what inspired me to write many other short stories on my blog.

I remember as a child, writing stories with paper and pen, and then on the computer. In high school, I was going through a rough patch, and my mom encouraged me to write stories as a way of taking control of my pain and turning it into something I could feel proud of. And 2019 was an extremely difficult year for me, it was right as my mom’s health began severely declining. The more suffering I felt, the more inspired I became to create. It was a need to escape from reality, to create a world of my own.

I have always felt a fascination towards mermaids. Growing up right by the bay, taking yearly summer vacations to the shore, inspired me to write about a beachy environment. Since I was a child, I always had a strange inclination towards the thought of having pink hair. I dyed the tips of my hair pink when I was seventeen, and then did my whole hair when I was twenty-four.

The color “fuchsia” is a deeply vivid pink-purple-red color that truly describes Fuchsia’s personality. Fuchsia is bold, outgoing, and self-assured — but she is also an actress who wears these traits as a mask. Throughout the story, you will learn that she is actually incredibly doubtful and terrified of relying on anyone else. But she is on a journey to find bravery. The Captain begins as a mystery, and you will learn that there is far more to him than meets the eye. Underneath that fancy title is a real person, with real insecurities, real feelings, and real fears.

This story is somewhat similar to the first draft, with the same (plus additional) characters. However, I did make many changes, added much more details, and covered a lot of plot-holes.

Imagining a story and writing it down is not so hard, but having the focus and persistence to keep up with it is the most challenging part. I kept getting tempted to begin writing other novels, but I had to push myself to just fixate on one thing at a time. Now having said that, I can’t wait to write more novels. This is my first book but definitely not my last!

      1. So fun!! Of course 🙂 Is Fuschia by any chance a mermaid who uses sea plants, pearls and things for their metaphysical healing properties? Guess I’ll have to read it to fun out 🤔😄 I feel like that would be a cool trait to give to a character, if you haven’t already 💜

      2. Yes I like that!!! So at the start of the story, the mermaid world is in deep need of healing. But, without spoiling too much, I can say that Fuchsia is on her way to wanting to become a healer. So that would definitely be something for me to incorporate into next book. Thanks! 😄💙🧜‍♀️
