“Filth on hands, feet, and body may be washed off with water;
Clothes fouled by dirt may be washed with soap;
The mind fouled by sin and evil
May only be cleansed by devotion to God.”Sikhism. Adi Granth, Japuji 20, M.1, p.4
The body gets dirty. The world is full of germs, bacteria, viruses, and other yucky stuff. We wash our hands, take showers, and follow other hygienic practices in order to stay clean.
You make a choice not to go roll in a pile of mud, knowing it will make you dirty. You wear lighter clothing in warmer months so you don’t get too sweaty.
Yet the filth is unavoidable. You have to sweat if you want to be healthy by remaining active. You have to go outside and get your groceries if you want to keep living. And even if you lay in bed all day, you still find yourself feeling greasy after a certain amount of time. It’s just inevitable.
So, as just mentioned, you clean your body with soap and water. You use deodorant and other fresh-smelling sprays. You do the laundry so your clothes are fresh.
In the same way, your mind becomes “dirty.”
The world is full of negative energy — like the non-physical version of filth and dirt. Instead of affecting your body directly, it affects your mind — in turn affecting your thoughts, your speech, your actions. It can even manifest into your body as stress-related health problems. And you’re spreading that filth all over without even realizing it.
Even if you choose not to associate with anyone, hide away in your bedroom all day, you can’t avoid it. You get caught up in negative thought-loops. You feel heaviness. Your mind is still tainted.
There is no literal “soap” for your mind, for impure ways of thinking. But there is an equivalent — and that is faith.
You must actively fill your mind with faith in order to keep your mind clean. And when your mind is clean, your life is free of toxicity.
“Devotion to God” comes in many forms. It can be prayer, it can be meditation, it can be studying religious scripture, it can be walking through nature and feeling grateful, it can be focusing on the bigger picture and the greater good as opposed to your current needs, it can be the act of following God’s words, the act of listening to your heart, the act of letting go of control, and so on…
Cleanse yourself from anything that is toxic, negative, and heavy. Have faith.
